Winter Shoot | Local produce | Julia Dawson

Winter Shoot | Local produce | Julia Dawson

Inspired by living in this glorious part of the world, a group of us “locals” have decided to put together a beautiful (we hope) Coffee Table book illustrating some of what makes the heart of the KZN Midlands such a special place.

To this end, we arranged to photograph one of our local ladies, Julia Dawson, as she prepared and cooked something special using only locally sourced produce.  Julia decided on a slow-cooked Zulu Waters Venison Osso Bucco-style dish.  To find out more about her and/or beg the recipe you’d need to visit the ~ Family, Food & Company  ~ an excellent source of lovely local information on places to visit and where to find excellent, organic, fresh local produce.  Keep your eyes open for some trout secrets too.

Also definitely worth mention is Megan, another local resident who is allegedly a brilliant brew master – find more info here:  Clockwork Brewhouse.

Julia used most of the veggies out of her kitchen garden, despite the fact that we are well on our way in to frosty Rosetta Winters.  Our local Spar also stocks some amazingly fresh, quality and locally sourced ingredients.

Another special find is the Wonderbag.  Something I’ve only heard of.  You heat up your stew or soup and then shove it in the bag to slow-cook for the next 6 – 8 hours, saving hugely on gas or electricity.  And they don’t cost a fortune either.  More about these amazing creations on Julia’s website.
